The University of Virginia is currently seeking nominations for an interim president following the resignation of its former leader, James Ryan. His departure, which occurred last Friday, was prompted by pressures from the Department of Justice, leading to significant changes in the university’s leadership.
The nomination process is open to all members of the university community until July 25. After this date, the board plans to hold a series of listening sessions to gather insights from faculty, staff, division leaders, and students, ensuring that a diverse range of voices is heard in this critical decision-making process.
Rachel Sheridan, the board rector, emphasized the board’s commitment to engaging with the community during this transition. “The Board of Visitors is dedicated to collaborating with our community members to understand their viewpoints and to maintain stability and continuity as we move forward,” she stated in a recent announcement. “Shared governance is a fundamental principle of our institution, and we will honor it as we select both an interim president and our next permanent president thereafter.”
In the interim, Jennifer Wagner Davis, the university’s chief operating officer, has stepped in as acting president, ensuring that the university continues to operate smoothly during this transitional phase.
The circumstances surrounding Ryan’s resignation were complex, as the Justice Department had accused him and the university of not adequately addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs on campus, which they claimed violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Despite these allegations, the Trump administration clarified that it did not explicitly demand Ryan’s resignation.
As the university navigates this period of change, it remains focused on fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration, aiming to create a sustainable framework for future leadership.
