In an impressive feat, Threads, a platform launched just two years ago as a rival to Twitter, has now surpassed 400 million monthly active users. This significant milestone was shared by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, who expressed gratitude for the community that has helped shape Threads into a vibrant space for open dialogue.
“As of a few weeks ago, we have more than 400 million active users on Threads each month,” Mosseri stated. “What began as a quirky idea to challenge Twitter has transformed into a substantial platform that encourages diverse viewpoints. We appreciate everyone for contributing to this journey, and we recognize that there is still much work ahead of us to enhance the experience further.”
This latest achievement indicates that Threads has successfully attracted an additional 50 million users in just the last quarter. Earlier, Meta’s CEO had reported that the platform had reached over 350 million monthly active users, showcasing its rapid growth trajectory.
In comparison, Twitter boasts over 600 million monthly active users, according to previous remarks from its former leadership. This highlights the competitive landscape in which Threads is operating, as it continues to gain traction among users.
Recent analytics from a market intelligence firm revealed that Threads is closing the gap on Twitter in terms of daily active users on mobile devices. In June, Threads recorded 115.1 million daily active users, reflecting a remarkable 127.8% increase from the previous year. Conversely, Twitter experienced a slight decline, with 132 million daily active users, marking a 15.2% drop year-over-year.
Despite Threads’ impressive growth in mobile engagement, the data indicates that Twitter still leads in terms of overall web traffic. In June, Twitter recorded an average of 145.8 million daily web visits globally, while Threads had significantly fewer, at just 6.9 million.
The surge in Threads’ user base can be attributed to the introduction of several new features over the past year. These enhancements include direct messaging, integrations with the fediverse, customizable feeds, and AI-driven summaries of trending topics, all aimed at enriching user experience and engagement.
