In a groundbreaking move for cancer research, a monumental $2 billion donation has been pledged to the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University by Phil Knight, co-founder of a leading sportswear company, and his wife, Penny. This generous contribution, announced last week, marks a historic moment as the largest single donation ever made to a health center affiliated with a university in the United States.
The primary aim of this substantial gift is to enhance the integration of cancer diagnostics, treatment, and patient care, paving the way for innovative approaches in oncology. With this funding, the Knight Cancer Institute will gain autonomy within OHSU, establishing its own board of directors. This board will be led by Brian Druker, a prominent leukemia researcher who has collaborated closely with the Knights and played a pivotal role in developing a groundbreaking drug that significantly extends the lives of patients suffering from chronic myeloid leukemia.
OHSU President Shereef Elnahal expressed the profound impact of this donation, stating, “This unprecedented investment will transform the lives of millions affected by cancer, particularly those in Oregon. It reflects a deep trust in the exceptional work carried out by our clinicians, researchers, and staff at the Knight Cancer Institute. Dr. Druker’s vision for a comprehensive care system—designed to ensure a seamless patient experience from diagnosis onward—will now be realized. Thanks to the remarkable generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Knight, Oregon is set to become a leader in cancer care and research.”
The Knights have been instrumental supporters of the Knight Cancer Institute since its inception. Back in 2013, they committed to donating $500 million, contingent upon the university matching this amount within two years. This challenge was successfully met, aided by $200 million in bonds from the Oregon Legislature, $100 million from a prominent local business leader, and contributions from approximately 10,000 individuals across all 50 states and 15 countries.
As the landscape of cancer research continues to evolve, this significant investment not only underscores the importance of philanthropy in advancing medical science but also highlights the collaborative efforts of communities coming together for a common cause. The future of cancer treatment and patient care is brighter than ever, thanks to the unwavering commitment of individuals like the Knights.
