New Features on TikTok Empower Songwriters

In an exciting development for music creators, TikTok is rolling out innovative features designed to help songwriters showcase their talents. These enhancements, currently in beta testing, include a dedicated “Songwriter” label and a new section on user profiles specifically for displaying musical works. This initiative aims to provide songwriters with better marketing tools to connect with potential clients and audiences.

Initially, access to these features is limited to a select group of publishing partners and songwriters. Those interested in participating will need to join a waitlist to gain access to the new label and music highlight section.

To better understand the needs of songwriters on social media, TikTok conducted a survey involving over 870 songwriters and held interviews with several of them. The insights gained from these discussions, along with findings from an independent survey, revealed that a significant number of songwriters utilize social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to promote their work. This feedback played a crucial role in the decision to develop these new features.

According to TikTok’s Global Head of Music Publishing Licensing and Partnership, the platform is dedicated to supporting songwriters by providing tools that celebrate their artistry. The new features allow songwriters to present their music alongside their personal content, enabling them to share stories about their creative process and life experiences, thereby enhancing their visibility and audience engagement.

In the competitive landscape of music streaming, other platforms like Spotify have been introducing features for songwriters to promote their work for several years. Last year, Tidal took a step further by launching tools that help songwriters track their royalties and manage their credits effectively.

Despite the closure of its music streaming service, TikTok continues to play a vital role in music discovery and artist promotion. Earlier this year, the platform introduced a dedicated tool for artists, allowing them to track the performance of their campaigns and music tracks.
