Investigation into Vandalism Targeting Michigan Leaders’ Residences

April 24, 2025

In a shocking revelation, the office of the Michigan attorney general disclosed on Thursday that recent police operations in Ann Arbor, Canton, and Ypsilanti were part of an extensive investigation into a series of vandalism incidents. These acts, which included pro-Palestine graffiti and property damage at the residences of key university officials, have raised significant concerns about safety and political expression.

According to a statement from Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office, the investigation has been ongoing for over a year and has uncovered what appears to be a coordinated effort behind these vandalism acts. The report identified 12 locations where incidents have occurred between February 2024 and March 2025, including the homes of the University of Michigan’s president, provost, chief investment officer, and regent Jordan Acker.

The estimated financial impact of these vandalism incidents is around $100,000, as detailed in the attorney general’s release. The crimes were predominantly committed during the night, with some incidents occurring while children were asleep in their homes. Reports indicate that windows were broken, and in two separate cases, harmful chemical substances were thrown into residences. Each site was marked with political slogans, indicating a deliberate message behind the vandalism.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with these incidents. However, police forces, including local law enforcement and the FBI, executed raids on five homes associated with pro-Palestinian activists on Wednesday. Lavinia Dunagan, a Ph.D. student and co-chair of the university graduate student union’s communications committee, reported that at least seven individuals were detained during these operations, although none were formally arrested. Most of those detained were students, with one being an employee of Michigan Medicine.

The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) issued a statement expressing concern over the raids, noting that officers confiscated personal belongings from several residences and at least two vehicles. The state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations also condemned the actions, highlighting that property damage occurred during the raids and individuals were handcuffed without charges.

In a particularly alarming incident, the attorney general’s office confirmed that police forcibly breached an entryway after more than an hour of attempts to negotiate access for a court-authorized search warrant. This aggressive approach has sparked discussions about the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties, especially in politically charged environments.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the implications of these events on free speech and political activism. The situation underscores the need for dialogue and understanding in addressing the complexities of political expression in today’s society.
