In a remarkable shift in the tech landscape, David Petrou, a prominent engineer known for his pivotal roles in groundbreaking projects, has embarked on an exciting new venture. After dedicating over 17 years to a major tech company, he has taken the leap to establish his own startup, aiming to redefine how we communicate in group settings.
Petrou’s vision is clear: he believes that the rapid evolution of technology presents unique opportunities that are best explored within the dynamic environment of a startup. “The pace of change in technology is astounding, and I felt compelled to pursue ideas that could thrive in a more agile setting,” he shared.
His brainchild, Continua, is set to transform group communication by integrating AI agents into popular messaging platforms like SMS, iMessage, and Discord. This innovative approach aims to enhance collaboration and streamline interactions among users.
“Essentially, we are harnessing the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to enrich group conversations,” Petrou explained, highlighting the potential of AI to facilitate more meaningful exchanges.
Recently, Continua announced a successful seed funding round, securing $8 million to propel its mission forward. The investment was spearheaded by a prominent venture capital firm, with additional backing from other notable investors.
During the development of Continua, Petrou observed a common behavior among users: they would often engage with AI tools like ChatGPT and then manually share insights in their group chats. This inspired him to create a solution that allows AI to participate directly in conversations.
“Imagine planning a trip or deciding on dinner options; an AI agent can seamlessly assist in these discussions, making the process smoother and more efficient,” he noted.
Continua’s AI agents are designed to minimize the chaos often associated with group chats by providing relevant information only when necessary. As discussions unfold, the AI can automatically set reminders, initiate polls, and even create shared documents with checklists and tasks.
If users need to recall specific details from their conversations, they can simply send a direct message to the AI for quick access to the information.
While the concept may seem straightforward, Petrou emphasizes the technical challenges involved in enabling LLMs to engage effectively in group dynamics. Most AI models are tailored for one-on-one interactions, necessitating a unique approach to adapt them for group settings.
For example, it’s crucial that the AI does not respond to every comment made by group members. “The agent must possess social intelligence to navigate these interactions appropriately,” Petrou remarked, explaining the intricate adjustments made to ensure the AI integrates smoothly into conversations.
Users have the flexibility to call upon the AI when needed or instruct it to remain silent if it becomes too intrusive. Getting started with Continua is simple; users can add the AI’s contact information to their group chats.
While other companies are also venturing into AI-assisted conversations, Petrou asserts that Continua is uniquely positioned to excel in group interactions.
One of the investors, a partner at the venture capital firm, expressed confidence in Petrou’s vision, stating that he recognized the potential of Continua even in its early conceptual stages. “David is an exceptional engineer with a deep understanding of AI, and his insights are invaluable,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, Continua has numerous avenues for monetization, including potential services for event planning and travel arrangements, which could be offered as premium features in the future.
