Graduate students encounter distinct challenges that can hinder their academic and personal growth. Many educational institutions are now prioritizing the teaching of health and wellness principles while fostering a sense of community to enhance student success.
The success of graduate students has become an increasingly important focus for higher education institutions. Recent national statistics indicate that certain programs may not provide a favorable return on investment, leaving students burdened with significant debt. Alarmingly, only 58 percent of individuals who enroll in graduate programs manage to complete their degrees within a six-year timeframe.
The recent elimination of specific loan options, as part of a comprehensive legislative package, could further complicate students’ financial situations, potentially affecting enrollment rates and the persistence of students in various programs.
Moreover, graduate students often face issues related to basic needs, with 12.2 percent experiencing food insecurity and 4.6 percent facing homelessness, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.
In light of these challenges, several institutions have implemented innovative initiatives aimed at improving the financial and personal well-being of graduate students.
Texas Christian University: Professional Attire for M.B.A. Students
At Texas Christian University’s Neeley School of Business, administrators have launched a program that provides M.B.A. students with complimentary professional attire, enabling low-income students to present themselves confidently in the job market.
In collaboration with a local suit manufacturer, eligible students can receive a tailored suit featuring a unique lining that includes their name. Additionally, through generous donations, students may also obtain shoes and accessories as needed.
To qualify for this program, students must submit an application outlining their career aspirations and a brief statement of financial need, which the university uses to select recipients.
With over 205,000 students earning an M.B.A. in the 2021-22 academic year, this degree remains one of the most sought-after graduate programs in the United States. However, the high cost of education continues to be a significant barrier for many aspiring professionals.
Nearly half of the students surveyed indicated that the financial burden of an M.B.A. program is a primary obstacle to pursuing further education, highlighting the need for supportive initiatives.
Wichita State University: Prioritizing Mental Health
Wichita State University has recognized the critical role of mental well-being in leadership development by introducing a mandatory course for executive M.B.A. students that focuses on wellness as a key leadership skill.
The course, titled Mental Wellness as a Business Strategy, was launched in the fall of 2024 and aims to integrate mental health initiatives into organizational culture, providing students with tools to foster psychologically safe environments and implement effective mental health policies.
California State University, Fullerton: Comprehensive Support Programs
Project upGRADS, which stands for Utilizing and Promoting Graduate Resources and Access for Disadvantaged Students, offers advising, mentorship, and scholarships to students at California State University, Fullerton. Since its inception in 2019, the program has supported nearly 7,000 students across various educational levels.
Recognized for its innovative approach to supporting Latino students, Project upGRADS provides essential information about the benefits of graduate education, guidance on navigating admissions and financial aid, and opportunities for faculty mentorship and professional networking.
Graduate students can request to be paired with faculty members who assist with research, career development, and overcoming challenges such as impostor syndrome. Additionally, students can participate in a dedicated online community that offers resources for thesis writing and a calendar of workshops and events.
Ohio State University: Expanding Mental Health Services
In 2024, Ohio State University enhanced its mental health resources for graduate students by investing in peer mental health ambassador training, teletherapy services, and the development of online mental health modules for self-paced learning and preventive care.
The university also expanded its on-campus services to ensure that students have access to support during evenings and weekends, addressing the critical need for mental health care among graduate students.
These initiatives reflect a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in academic success and overall well-being. If your institution has implemented a unique program aimed at supporting student success, we encourage you to share your experiences.
