The highly anticipated encrypted direct messaging feature, known as XChat, is now being rolled out to a broader audience, marking a significant step in enhancing user privacy and security.
Initially launched in beta earlier this year, XChat is now available to a larger number of users, including those who do not hold a premium subscription. This expansion reflects the platform’s commitment to providing secure communication options for all users.
XChat operates independently from the traditional direct messaging inbox and employs end-to-end encryption to ensure that conversations remain private. The feature includes various functionalities such as media sharing, group conversations, pinned messages, and the option to mark messages as read or unread. There are also rumors of a disappearing message mode being developed, which would further enhance privacy.
Currently, users must opt-in to access XChat. On desktop, it can be found in the messages tab, where users can select “Chat” from a menu located above the “Message requests” section. For mobile users, the “Chat” option is conveniently placed in the main navigation bar on the left, just above the Communities section.
To begin using XChat, users are required to set a four-digit code to secure their messages, similar to the security measures found on other encrypted messaging platforms. Only after establishing this code can users start messaging others who have also opted into the feature.
It is important to note that XChat does not completely replace the existing direct messaging system. Instead, traditional messages are now categorized under a tab labeled “unencrypted” within the chat menu, allowing users to differentiate between secure and standard communications.
