Clemson University Discontinues Several Faculty and Staff Advisory Groups

September 04, 2025

Clemson University has made the decision to dissolve several faculty and staff advisory groups that were established to provide guidance to university leadership on how to better support various communities within the institution.

The groups that have been disbanded include the Accessibility Commission, the Asian Pacific Islander DESI American Commission, the Commission on the Black Experience, the Commission on Latino Affairs, the LGBTQ Commission, the Veterans Commission, and the Commission on Women.

University officials announced in a recent statement that these commissions have successfully completed their mission, leaving a significant impact on the values, strength, and development of the Clemson community and campus.

A report from a conservative think tank highlighted these commissions as examples of ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in educational institutions, despite a broader push against such programs in recent years.

The report suggested that while these groups may not be officially labeled as DEI, they continue to engage in activities related to identity politics that were previously managed by DEI personnel.

A representative from the university clarified that the decision to disband the commissions was not influenced by the aforementioned report, stating that all commission members were notified of the changes prior to the report’s release.

The university’s announcement emphasized that these commissions have played a crucial role in fostering dialogue, building connections within the Clemson community, and creating a sense of belonging among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Their contributions will continue to resonate within the collaborative culture they helped establish.

Furthermore, the university reassured that individuals are still encouraged to form connections and seek new avenues for fostering community and belonging if they wish to do so.
