In a world where discussions about discrimination and bigotry are increasingly prevalent, it is crucial to examine the realities faced by individuals within academic institutions. The narrative surrounding antisemitism at George Mason University has sparked significant debate, and it is essential to approach this topic with a nuanced understanding.
Reflecting on the past, one cannot ignore the experiences of those who have faced discrimination firsthand. In the 1970s Soviet Union, a Jewish comedian humorously pointed out that to discuss the flavor of coconuts, one should consult those who have tasted them. Similarly, to understand the complexities of antisemitism in academia, it is vital to listen to those who have lived through it.
My own journey began in Moscow, where my Jewish identity was a matter of public record. Despite excelling academically, I faced barriers that were not openly acknowledged. The unwritten quotas limiting Jewish representation in higher education were a stark reminder of the systemic discrimination that existed. Although I eventually pursued my studies at a different institution, the challenges persisted as I sought employment, revealing the pervasive nature of antisemitism in various forms.
After relocating to the United States in 1994, I dedicated over two decades to research and education, ultimately joining the faculty at George Mason University. This institution prides itself on its diversity, and throughout my tenure, I have witnessed a culture that fosters respect and understanding among students of various backgrounds. My interactions with students from different faiths have been enriching, and I have found them to be open-minded and empathetic.

What truly concerns me is the notion that I, as a Jewish individual without Israeli citizenship, should feel compelled to defend every action taken by the Israeli government. Such expectations are not only unreasonable but also infringe upon my right to hold independent views on international matters.
In conclusion, I stand by the leadership of George Mason University and believe that the institution is committed to protecting all its members from discrimination and harassment. The allegations of antisemitism, framed as a defense of Jewish individuals, pose a more significant threat to our community than any isolated incidents could ever represent.
