In a significant move to bolster its presence in Latin America, a leading tech giant has announced a substantial investment aimed at enhancing cloud services in Chile. This initiative is expected to cater to both new and existing customers, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s digital landscape.
The company revealed plans to invest over $4 billion to establish a new AWS infrastructure region, which will consist of multiple data centers in Chile by the end of 2026. This ambitious project underscores the growing demand for cloud solutions in the region.
The investment will facilitate the creation of three distinct availability zones, which are clusters of isolated data centers designed to ensure high availability and reliability. Additionally, the company is committed to hiring and nurturing local talent to manage and support operations within this new AWS region.
According to a statement from a senior executive at AWS, the new South America (Chile) Region is poised to meet the surging demand for cloud services across Latin America. It promises to deliver secure, dependable, and efficient cloud infrastructure, enabling organizations to leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to drive growth and innovation.
Currently, there is a diverse array of customers in Chile utilizing AWS services, including major players in various sectors such as airlines, agriculture, and education.
This latest investment is not the first foray into the Chilean market for the tech giant. In 2021, the company introduced AWS Outposts, which expanded on-premises access to AWS services within the country. Furthermore, in 2023, it enhanced customer connectivity options by allowing private connections between AWS and local data centers or offices, alongside the rollout of AWS Local Zones to facilitate low-latency access to AWS offerings.
As the cloud computing landscape continues to evolve, several competitors have also established a foothold in Chile. Notably, another major cloud provider launched its first cloud region in the country in 2021, following earlier announcements about expansion plans. Additionally, another competitor revealed its first data center region in Chile in 2020, highlighting the competitive nature of the cloud services market in the region.
With these developments, the future of cloud computing in Chile looks promising, as investments in infrastructure and technology pave the way for enhanced digital capabilities and opportunities for local businesses.
