University Launches Introductory Course on Generative AI for Community Members

In an era where generative artificial intelligence is reshaping various industries, a prominent university has introduced a self-paced course aimed at equipping students, faculty, and staff with essential AI skills. This initiative reflects the growing demand for AI proficiency in the job market, as educational institutions strive to prepare their communities for the future.

The university has rolled out a complimentary online course designed to provide a foundational understanding of generative AI and its practical applications in everyday life and professional settings. This course, titled GenAI 101, is accessible to anyone affiliated with the university and offers a certificate upon completion, validating the skills acquired.

Current Trends: The integration of artificial intelligence tools has become increasingly prevalent in academic environments, particularly in teaching methodologies.

A recent study revealed that a significant percentage of educators—over half—report utilizing generative AI in their classrooms, with many anticipating that AI-driven tools and innovative teaching methods will play a crucial role in education within the next few years.

Even before entering higher education, many students express familiarity with generative AI and expect their institutions to facilitate their skill development in this area. A survey indicated that a large portion of high school seniors planning to pursue college have engaged with generative AI tools, while a notable percentage expect their future colleges to incorporate AI education into their curricula. However, access to AI resources is not uniform, as some studies show that nearly half of young individuals have never interacted with AI technologies.

Concerns regarding AI literacy and safety are also on the rise. A recent survey highlighted that a majority of respondents find it challenging to identify AI-generated content, underscoring the need for educational initiatives that address these issues.

Course Overview: GenAI 101 is available at no cost to all members of the university community, including students, faculty, and staff across all campuses. The course is optional and does not carry academic credit, allowing for a more flexible and creative approach to content delivery.

Led by Brian Williams, the faculty chair of the Virtual Advanced Business Technologies Department, the course development team has curated essential topics related to generative AI. The primary objective is to equip participants with practical knowledge and insights to navigate an AI-influenced landscape effectively.

This self-paced course comprises eight modules and 16 lessons, featuring engaging video lectures that demonstrate real-world applications of generative AI tools. Participants will learn how to utilize these tools for various tasks, such as event planning and schedule management, while also exploring topics like prompt engineering, data storytelling, and ethical AI usage. The entire course can be completed in approximately four to five hours.

To enhance the learning experience, the course includes an AI character named Crimson, who guides participants through the material, along with an interactive AI tutor, Crimson Jr., available to answer questions as they arise.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate that can be showcased on professional platforms like LinkedIn or included in their resumes.

Looking Ahead: The course is set to launch on August 18, with the university president being the first participant to enroll. Students will be automatically registered for GenAI 101, ensuring easy access. Additionally, some faculty members plan to integrate the course content into their syllabi, aiming to bridge the gap in AI education and resource engagement among students.
