Georgetown Researcher Granted Temporary Work Resumption After ICE Detention

August 07, 2025

In a significant development, a researcher from Georgetown University who faced detention by immigration authorities earlier this year has been granted permission to return to his academic duties, at least for the time being. This decision comes as part of a court settlement announced on Tuesday, highlighting the ongoing complexities surrounding immigration and academic freedom.

While this agreement allows the postdoctoral fellow, Badar Khan Suri, to continue his work, it does not provide a long-term solution regarding his residency status in the United States. Furthermore, the settlement does not address his allegations that his First Amendment rights were infringed upon due to his pro-Palestinian statements and alleged connections to Hamas, which are still pending a judicial review.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Suri will retain his student status and employment, ensuring that he can contribute to the academic community during this uncertain period.

Initially detained in March, Suri was released in May. His situation is further complicated by his wife’s citizenship and her father’s previous association with Hamas, which reportedly played a role in his arrest, according to various reports.

Both parties involved in the case have expressed that the settlement emerged from constructive negotiations, although officials from the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security have refrained from commenting on the matter.

“We are pleased that the government has agreed to restore Dr. Suri’s and his children’s status and records,” stated Eden Heilman, an attorney from the ACLU representing Suri. “Dr. Suri is looking forward to re-engaging with the academic community at Georgetown, and this decision allows him to do so this fall.”
