The index, which highlights the most American-made cars, has seen Tesla vehicles clinch the top four positions. This year, the Model 3 emerged as the leading vehicle in terms of American manufacturing.
Surprising Statistics: EVs in the Top Ten
What may come as a surprise to many is that electric vehicles accounted for six out of the top ten spots in the American-Made Index. Alongside Tesla, the Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 also made their mark, securing the 6th and 10th positions, respectively. This showcases a growing trend where consumers are increasingly opting for electric options that are also manufactured in the U.S.
Criteria for Ranking Vehicles
The American-Made Index evaluates vehicles based on five key criteria: the location of final assembly, the percentage of parts sourced from the U.S. and Canada, the origin of engines and transmissions, and the involvement of the U.S. workforce in manufacturing. This year, over 400 vehicles were analyzed to determine the 99 that made it onto the index, highlighting the rigorous standards applied in this evaluation.
Kia EV6: A Leader in Domestic Parts Usage
The Kia EV6 stands out not only for its performance but also for its impressive use of domestic parts. Assembled in Georgia, this vehicle boasts an impressive 80% of its components sourced from the U.S. and Canada, making it the highest-ranking vehicle in terms of domestic parts usage in the current market.
Growth of Electric Vehicles in Rankings
Interestingly, the number of electric vehicles qualifying for the index has increased significantly. While only eight EVs made the list last year, this year saw 11 battery-electric vehicles, including notable models like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Hyundai Ioniq 5, join the ranks. Additionally, 19 hybrids and plug-in hybrids were recognized, indicating a robust shift towards electrification in the automotive industry.
